Thinking about remodeling your kitchen? You are not alone. Many homeowners feel both excited and overwhelmed by the possibilities. Deciding whether to do it yourself or hire a contractor is a big choice. Setting a budget is crucial, as is understanding what you can accomplish on your own. In this article, I’ll share our journey of remodeling our kitchen, including the choices we made and the steps we took to create a space we truly love.

Setting Your Budget

Before jumping into any remodeling project, setting a budget is essential. We started by listing all the elements we wanted to update: cabinets, countertops, appliances, a new sink, faucet, flooring, and paint. After researching the average costs of these items in our area, I estimated a budget of about $10,000.

We also weighed the costs of hiring professionals versus going solo. For instance, local contractors quoted anywhere between $5,000 to $15,000 for labor, depending on the complexity. We opted to tackle most of the project myself to save money and enjoy the process of creating something unique.

Assessing Your Skills

Next, we had to assess my skills. We had experience with DIY tasks but needed to be honest about what we could and could not do. W watched dozens of YouTube videos and read countless articles.

For example, we learned how to install cabinets, paint, and perform plumbing tasks, such as connecting the sink. However, we recognized that electrical work and installing counters were best left to the pros. We hired a local licensed electrician to help us with this task and a countertop specialist from Home Depot, which made me feel more confident about the project.

Planning the Layout

With our budget and self-assessment complete, We focused on planning the layout. I wanted to create an inviting and functional space. Sketching different arrangements helped! I considered the placement of appliances, the sink, and the flow of movement.

For instance, I realized having the stove near the sink would make cooking easier. After some trial and error, I decided on a L-shaped layout with additional counter space across from the stove, which opened the kitchen while incorporating a comfortable dining space.

Choosing Materials

Selecting materials was a thrilling part of this journey. We spent hours at home improvement stores and scoured online retailers for options.

We chose quartz countertops for their durability, which lasts up to 25 years with proper care. For the cabinets, we picked a classic white finish complemented by stainless steel knobs for a sleek touch. For the backsplash, we opted for a 4-inch quartz along with paint that contributed personality and visual appeal to the area.

Demo Day

Demo day arrived, filled with both excitement and anxiety. With our safety goggles on and tools at the ready, we removed the old cabinets and countertops. It was hard work, but we felt a sense of accomplishment as the old kitchen transformed into a blank slate.

We made sure to prepare for the mess by having ample trash bags and a cleanup plan. We had a dumpster delivered before we started to make our lives easier. On demo day, we learned firsthand that working systematically makes a difference in reducing chaos.

Installation

Once the demo was done, we jumped into the installation phase. We started with the cabinets, carefully following the instructions. To our surprise, putting the cabinets we purchased from Cabinets To Go together was fairly straightforward. To ensure that our cabinets were level, we utilized a laser level and marked the walls prior to beginning. After positioning each cabinet, we verified its levelness using shims where necessary. Subsequently, we installed fillers between the cabinets as required to guarantee that the doors had sufficient clearance to open. Additionally, we enhanced the basic cabinets by incorporating pull-out drawers and a lazy Susan.

Next, we prepared the floor using Pergo FloorMate to improve the performance of our flooring. Our objective was to create a barrier between the crawl space and the living area, thereby enhancing thermal insulation and assisting in maintaining the desired room temperature. After completing this step, we proceeded to install the Pergo XP Haley Oak Water Resistant Laminate Wood Flooring, which is a floating floor that complements our new kitchen. When installing a floating floor, it is essential to ensure that you possess the appropriate tools to facilitate the process. Following some research, we acquired a Ridgid table saw with a stand. My husband enjoys having new tools to ensure the job is executed correctly. He already owned a miter saw, which proved to be quite useful for this project. Another crucial tool we obtained was a Laminate and Wood Flooring Installation Kit, as it is necessary to ensure that your planks fit tightly.

Afterward, we acquired the appliances from P.C. Richards and Sons. We opted for stainless steel appliances due to their appealing contrast with the white cabinets. After installing the appliances, we positioned the microwave above the stove to maximize our counter space.

Then came the countertop installation, which we hired Home Depot to install. Accurate measurements were crucial here, and we were thrilled when everything fit perfectly! The sink and faucet installation posed more of a challenge, but utilizing online guides helped us navigate these tricky tasks. We went with the KRAUS Kore 27 in. Undermount Single Bowl 16 Gauge Stainless Steel Kitchen Workstation Sink with Accessories and Delta Classic Faucet from Home Depot. The workstation provided us with more working space in a smaller kitchen.

Finishing Touches

With the major installations completed, our attention turned to the final details. We selected a gentle, warm paint hue that illuminated the area. We fitted the knobs on all the cabinets and drawers, which unified the overall look. Lastly, we added floor molding to finalize the flooring and elevate the kitchen's visual appeal.

To enhance the character, I included decorative features like antique decor on top of the cabinets that have been inherited through the family. It serves as a gentle reminder that our family remains with us.

Enjoying the New Space

After weeks of hard work, standing back to admire our new kitchen was deeply rewarding. Cooking in this beautiful space felt like a dream, and I loved hosting friends and family.

The kitchen had become not just a place to cook, but a warm gathering spot. The blend of styles reflected my personality, making the effort entirely worthwhile.

Taking the Leap

Deciding whether to remodel your kitchen yourself or hire a contractor is a personal choice shaped by your budget, skills, and availability. Personally, collaborating on the project with my husband proved to be a rewarding experience that imparted essential lessons regarding home enhancement and creativity, all while allowing us to bond. Our children also contributed to the effort!

If you are considering a kitchen remodel, assess your abilities, set a realistic budget, and plan thoughtfully. Whether you go DIY or hire help, you can create a beautiful kitchen that truly works for you. Happy remodeling!
